Flat Tires are Deflating

Stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire, you open your trunk and begin to look for the spare but wait a minute…it’s not there! Unfortunately this is a common reality in the 2020’s for all new vehicles as many new vehicles don’t come with a spare tire in the trunk anymore. You may be remembering times of the past in which a vehicle had a spare tire mounted in the trunk or underneath the vehicle and a small little jack to go with it. However those days, just like a vehicle’s spare tire, are gone. Nowadays modern vehicles tend to come with no spare and just a small can of flat tire repair gel, not exactly the most reliable or desirable way to handle an unexpected flat tire. Nobody wants to spend time on the side of the road, in the heat, rain, or snow waiting on a tow truck to come and take them to a local shop all because of a flat tire, and that’s why it’s imperative to carry a spare tire in your vehicle. Carrying a spare tire in your vehicle not only allows you to get back on the road quicker, but it provides peace of mind, allowing you to be confident that not even a flat tire can stop you on the road. There are a few different types of spare tires available on the market to suit every need, here’s a list of available types of spare tires.

Full-Size Spare

A full-size spare shares the same dimensions as the vehicle’s standard tire, the benefit being that it isn’t just a temporary fix until you arrive at your local mechanic to have a new tire mounted and balanced. A full-size spare also allows you to travel at regular speeds, which is something a smaller spare tire or “doughnut” would prohibit you from doing. A full-size spare is also one of the most effective and efficient options for a spare tire there is, making for minimal down time of your vehicle so life can carry on as usual without interruption. If a full-size spare tire is the right option for you, call our parts professionals at Jennings Chevy Buick GMC today to order your full-size spare.

Temporary Full-Size Spare

While a true full-size spare is the most effective option, the drawback of it taking up so much space in the vehicle is something to be considered. With that being said, a good option if you’re unable to house a full-size spare would be the temporary full-size spare. A temporary full-size spare tire is just like your regular, full-size tire, however it has a smaller tread depth and less weight to it in order to save on space while remaining effective. A temporary full-size spare will allow you to safely drive to Jennings Chevy Buick GMC Service Center so you can get a new tire mounted and balanced on the car. The temporary full-size spare is a great option for those that carry a lot of cargo, or even those driving compact cars which don’t have a lot of room for a full-size spare.

Compact Temporary Spare

A compact temporary spare may not be the most effective option in terms of being able to drive on it for miles or at regular speeds, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely ineffective or useless. A compact temporary spare will allow you to travel a short distance at lower speeds in order to help you arrive safely at Jennings Chevy Buick GMC’s Service Center. The compact temporary spare is a bit smaller and narrower than a full-size spare but it’s still just as useful in the event of an unexpected flat tire on the side of the road. These compact temporary spares or “doughnuts” tend to be the traditional spare tire most think of when they think of flat tire repair.

Folding Temporary Spare

A folding temporary spare is a small spare tire, similar to the “doughnut” spare but it is even more compact by being deflated and being able to be folded for easy and efficient storage. While you may not be able to travel at regular speeds with this tire, you will be able to safely arrive at Jennings Chevy Buick GMC in Chambersburg, PA, to receive a new tire and get on your way. These spares do require inflation before usage, which is an important thing to keep in mind when selecting the right spare tire to keep on hand.

Run-Flat Tires

The most cutting-edge technology when it comes to spare tires is the Run-Flat spare tire which allows you to keep driving at regular speeds for up to 50 miles from the initial puncture. This incredible technology allows a driver to safely and effectively drive in almost any type of condition to reach their mechanic’s shop in the event of an unexpected flat tire. Run-Flats are one of the most expensive spare tire options, but also one of the most effective outside of carrying a full-size spare.

Let’s Get Rolling

While flat tires are almost always unexpected and incredibly inconvenient, they are an inevitable part of owning a vehicle. Making sure you select the right kind of spare tire that fits all of your needs is a great way to help minimize the interference and inconvenience of an unexpected flat tire. Utilizing a spare tire properly can save you time, money and aggravation, but using one improperly could exacerbate the situation. When using a spare tire, keep in mind that the function of most spare tires is to help you arrive safely at a place of repair like Jennings Chevy Buick GMC Service Center, while maintaining mobility and freedom.

GMC HUMMER EV PICKUP
The GMC HUMMER EV celebrates the Fourth of July by showcasing the revolutionary performance of its launch control mode, known as Watts to Freedom.

The 2022 GMC HUMMER EV combines American ingenuity with revolutionary performance that puts drivers in the middle of every moment. The ultimate expression of that performance will be offered in HUMMER EV’s own launch control mode, known as Watts to Freedom1. This driver-selectable feature channels the propulsion system’s tremendous power into acceleration bursts — including reaching 0-60 mph in approximately 3 seconds2.

“Watts to Freedom unlocks the full potential of the propulsion system and puts all of its available power to the pavement,” said Al Oppenheiser, HUMMER EV chief engineer. “It’s an all-encompassing experience unlike anything else — purpose-built for straight-line fun.”

Three electric motors within the Ultium Drive system are expected to offer a GM-estimated up to 1,000 horsepower and, when multiplied through the front- and rear-drive unit gear ratios, offer up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque to the wheels2. The HUMMER EV’s extraordinary capabilities will blend with engaging user-experience technologies, creating a sense of intensity and drama for drivers and passengers.

As the vehicle readies itself for Watts to Freedom, a series of interior experiences convey the feeling of a “pre-launch countdown,” including interactive controls, unique sounds through the Bose speakers and engaging screen animations. The vehicle also activates the Adaptive Air Suspension and lowers 2 inches to prepare for the launch, providing a lower center of gravity.

“It’s an amazing demonstration of just how fast 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of electric propulsion can move you,” said Oppenheiser. “It’ll put a smile on your face every single time.”

American ingenuity is combined with American manufacturing3 as the HUMMER EV will be the first all-electric vehicle in GMC’s portfolio powered by General Motors’ new Ultium battery system. The battery cells will be produced as part of a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, at a new facility in Lordstown, Ohio.

Initial production of the HUMMER EV begins in fall 2021, at GM’s Factory ZERO, Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center3 — a nearly 40-year-old facility repurposed and retooled with a $2.2-billion investment devoted to electric vehicle production. Future production vehicles out of the factory will offer zero emissions.

Performance targets, estimates and capability specifications based on computer-aided analysis and simulation using virtual engineering tools. Estimates may vary depending on model and trim. Additional model and trim details can be found at GMC.com. Actual production model and results may vary.

CHEVROLET NASCAR NEXT GEN CAMARO ZL1 RACE CAR
Chevrolet’s new look on the racetrack will more closely connect to its cars in the showroom when Chevy campaigns its Next Gen Camaro ZL1 race car starting next season in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Chevrolet and other major automotive brands competing in the NASCAR Cup Series revealed their Next Gen models today. Chevrolet’s new look on the racetrack will more closely connect to its cars in the showroom when Chevy campaigns its Next Gen Camaro ZL1 race car, starting next season in the NASCAR Cup Series. The new look and features are a result of a collaborative effort by Chevrolet, the series and other original equipment manufacturers for race cars competing at the Cup level to look and perform more like their production counterparts.

The Next Gen Camaro ZL1 race car’s new lower greenhouse, shortened deck lid and widened track width contribute to a coupe-like appearance. A fully symmetrical body design makes the race car look even more like the production Camaro.

“Chevrolet engineers and designers worked alongside our race teams to develop this race car while staying true to the styling essence of the Camaro ZL1,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “This cooperation will benefit Chevrolet both on the track and the street.”

Both the Next Gen Camaro ZL1 race car and production Camaro ZL1 offer hood air extractors that enhance track performance.

“The Next Gen Camaro has a much stronger link to the production Camaro ZL1 in terms of styling integration, improved proportions and relevant technologies,” said Eric Warren, Chevrolet director of NASCAR Programs. “From an engineering standpoint, this is a seismic shift. It’s a completely new car that brings with it a lot of opportunity from a technical standpoint.”

Other changes to the 2022 Next Gen race car include:

  • Upgraded specs to match modern passenger vehicle technology, including independent rear suspension – like production Camaros – and rack and pinion steering.
  • An increase in wheel size from 15 to 18 inches. The larger diameter wheels allow for larger brakes for improved track performance. Wheels will be made from forged aluminum, like the wheels on the production Camaro ZL1.
  • A new transaxle that combines the transmission and rear gears into one package.
  • The bottom of the car will be sealed with an underwing and rear diffuser for enhanced aerodynamics.
  • A redesigned chassis features new front and rear bumpers with an energy-management system.
  • Both the front and rear clips bolt on to the center section for easier serviceability and damage repair.

Chevrolet initially introduced the Camaro ZL1 race car to NASCAR Cup competition in 2018. It was replaced by the Camaro ZL1 1LE race car in 2020, which Chase Elliott drove to a Driver’s Championship in the car’s first season.

Chevrolet has campaigned 14 different nameplates in the Cup Series, dating back to 1955, and with 798 victories is the winningest brand in NASCAR Cup Series history. Chevy’s first win was by Fonty Flock at Columbia Speedway in South Carolina in 1955, the same year Chevrolet introduced its famed small-block V-8. Since then, Chevrolet has won 39 Manufacturer Championships, including 13 in a row from 2003-2015, and 32 Driver Championships to lead all manufacturers.

The Next Gen Camaro ZL1 race car will make its points-paying debut at next season’s Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Feb. 20, 2022.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the Next Gen Camaro ZL1 race car Saturday, May 8, at 8 p.m. ET by joining “Chevy MyWay: Meet the All-New NASCAR Next Gen Camaro,” a free broadcast open to all.

CHEVROLET CAPTURES GT LE MANS MANUFACTURERS CHAMPIONSHIP

Chevrolet claimed the GT Le Mans Manufacturers title in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship today after the Corvette C8.R started the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. This is Chevrolet’s 13th Manufacturers title in IMSA GT competition since 2001 and concludes the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8.R’s inaugural season.

Corvette Racing fielded two of the new Corvette C8.Rs in the 2020 WeatherTech Championship. Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor and the No. 3 Corvette Racing team clinched the GTLM Drivers and Team championships two weeks ago at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

“The first season for the Corvette C8.R has shattered all of our expectations,” said Mark Reuss, GM president. “The success of the Corvette Racing team wouldn’t be possible without the close link between the crew and the Corvette engineering team. It has been great to watch these two teams work closely together to learn from each other. I can’t wait to see what next season brings.”

The mid-engine C8.R and 2020 Corvette Stingray were developed simultaneously, and the race car and production vehicle share more technology and parts than any previous-generation Corvette. When initial Corvette C8.R design and development work began more than five years ago, Corvette Racing engineers worked closely alongside Corvette production personnel. Within the last 18 months, track testing began with a heavy emphasis on wind tunnel and simulation testing.

Chevrolet swept the three full-season GTLM titles for the third time in five years. This is only the second time that a first-year Corvette race car has won an IMSA championship. In 2005, Corvette C6.R won the American Le Mans Series championship during its first season.

Corvette Racing captured six victories leading into Sebring. Garcia and Taylor gave the Corvette C8.R its first victory at Daytona International Speedway in July, Corvette Racing’s 100th IMSA win. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner won the next race in the No. 4 Corvette C8.R with Garcia and Taylor in second – the first 1-2 finish for the C8.R.

In addition, the Corvette C8.R has claimed seven pole positions and posted the fastest GTLM race lap at five events.

Chevy Vehicle

At SEMA360, Chevrolet will showcase a 1977 K5 Blazer converted to all-electric propulsion. The K5 Blazer-E is a functional proof of concept of the upcoming Electric Connect and Cruise package Chevrolet Performance plans to sell in the second half of 2021.

During the virtual event, Chevrolet Performance will survey SEMA members interested in building their own electric projects to help finalize Chevrolet’s initial eCrate offering.

“As GM introduces a new fleet of electric vehicles, it creates an exciting opportunity to bring EV technology to the aftermarket,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “Our vision is to offer a comprehensive line of Connect and Cruise systems from Chevrolet Performance – delivering a solution for every customer ranging from LSX V-8s to eCrate conversions.”

Building the K5 Blazer-E

Chevrolet first previewed the eCrate conversion concept with the Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro in 2018, followed by the Chevrolet E-10 in 2019. Learnings from those vehicles helped inform Chevrolet’s Electric Connect and Cruise strategy.

The new K5 Blazer-E retains as much of the stock Blazer as possible and approximately 90 percent of the new parts installed for the eCrate package are factory components from the Chevrolet Bolt EV.

To convert the 1977 K5 Blazer, the team first removed from the Blazer the original 175-horsepower 400 cubic-inch V-8, three-speed automatic, fuel system and exhaust. Then, the team installed a Bolt EV electric motor, delivering 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Chevrolet Performance electronically controlled four-speed automatic. The rest of the Blazer drivetrain remains untouched, including the transfer case, driveshaft and axles.

Power is supplied by a 400-volt Bolt EV battery pack with 60 kilowatt-hours of usable energy installed in the cargo area. Using production controllers and wiring harnesses preserves many Bolt EV features, including shock protection, battery heating and cooling, battery-overcharge protection and even regenerative braking.

The aftermarket components include an electric power steering kit, an electric pump providing vacuum to the stock brake system, and an electronic controller to drive inputs to the vintage Blazer gauges – such as displaying the battery’s state of charge on the original fuel gauge.

eCrate Installer Certification Program

To prepare for the eCrate launch, Chevrolet Performance is certifying Electric Connect and Cruise installers. Participating Chevrolet dealers and aftermarket companies will receive the training, tools and equipment needed to work with high-voltage systems and charging stations to service customers’ vehicles.

Lingenfelter Performance Engineering in Brighton, Michigan will be the first company to pilot the training and certification program. This experience will help inform the certification process for future installers.

The 60-kWh Electric Connect and Cruise package, expected to be available in the second half of 2021, includes:

  • 60-kWh battery pack
  • 200-horsepower electric motor
  • DC-to-AC power inverter to drive the electric motor
  • DC-to-DC power converter to power low-voltage systems
  • Wiring harnesses, controllers and water pumps for battery heating and cooling

Chevrolet Performance is also evaluating additional eCrate packages with higher-performance options and new battery configurations to fit a wider range of aftermarket applications. Longer term, the team will work to integrate GM’s modular Ultium battery system technologies.

“Minutes after Chevrolet showed the E-10 concept, customers started calling to ask how soon they could build their EV project,” said Russ O’Blenes, Chevrolet director of engineering, Performance and Racing. “The K5 Blazer-E demonstrates what is possible for customers who want to convert their vintage truck to a daily driver with the instant torque and unique driving experience of an EV. For customers who want more extreme performance, the modular eCrate system will have virtually limitless applications.”

More information about Chevrolet’s aftermarket offerings featured at SEMA360, including new performance parts for the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and full portfolio of crate engines, can be found at Chevrolet.com/SEMA.
