May is National Moving Month, marking the beginning of peak moving season in the United States. Moving can be more than a hassle, but also a new adventure! Follow our great tips for a safe, successful, and stress-free move!

Prep Ahead
Moving can seem daunting, but with some prep and planning, it’s a manageable adventure. Having an inventory list isn’t just great for moving but for insurance purposes as well. Write down your belongings, the amount (for multiple things such as cups), and which box they’ll be in. A checklist will ensure everything is packed, that nothing fragile is packed under heavy items, and save you time by numbering boxes instead of naming them.

Another great way to prep ahead is to Marie Kondo your home – donating, throwing away, and sorting items to lighten your load. Moving is some of the best times to reassess what you have and find things you thought were lost. Decluttering, sorting, and packing as far ahead as possible makes sorting a fun and easy chore that can make a move much more manageable.

Invest In Moving Equipment

Speaking of packing, don’t wait to run to the store to stock up on boxes, box cutters, markers, packing tape, paper towels, and garbage bags. That’s not the only thing on the equipment list, however. Buying, renting, or borrowing a furniture dolly, furniture pads or covers, and tie-down straps or rope for an easier move can make the process easier if not safer. Don’t risk injuries due to improper equipment or lifting.

Transportation
Everything’s packed, but how are you getting from point A to point B? Movers are always an option, but the average cost of moving a home can range between $2,000 and $4,000. Unless you’re moving for a new position that offers a relocation package, that’s not feasible for many households.

One of the biggest traditions is calling your friends and family, buying them a drink and some pizza, and getting to work packing a rented truck and your car – but what if you could save the money on the rental as well? A well-equipped car can hold a surprising amount of cargo. Some 2024 SUVs even have upwards of 144 cubic feet! Add in a roof rack, towing hitch, stowing seats, and more features to maximize your space, making your move much more affordable.

Upgrading for National Moving Month

Upgrading to a new car with more cargo has more benefits in the long run than a move. Did you know that people move around 11 times on average? Moving isn’t an if, it’s a when. Make sure you’re ready with plenty of space! The 2024 Buick Enclave and 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe are some of the best new models out there, with great features, ample cargo space, and efficient mileage for everyday driving and long-distance moving.

This National Moving Month, visit Jennings Chevrolet Buick GMC and get yourself a spacious, dependable car to cruise through one of the top three most stressful life events a person can experience in their lifetime. Our team can help you choose the vehicle that’s right for you right now and for many years to come!

William Durant

In 1886, embarking on a journey into the burgeoning vehicle industry at the tender age of 25, and then founding General Motors a mere two decades later, was no mean feat. This National Inventors Month, we shine a spotlight on our pioneering founder and inventor, William Durant, whose tale is a quintessential American narrative of perseverance, diligence, and triumph.

The Beginnings of William Durant
Before the emergence of GM, GMC, or even the automotive sector itself, William Durant’s early days were marked by humble beginnings. Dropping out of school, he initially engaged in laborious tasks such as stacking lumber and vending cigars. While this might not have seemed a promising start for a seventeen-year-old destined to become a titan of the American automotive landscape, Durant exhibited a flair for business, carving his own path. From his ventures in partnership at an insurance agency, Durant transitioned into the realm of automobiles. With just two carts and a design patent, Durant notched up blue ribbons and cart orders, swiftly earning the moniker “King of Carriage Makers” within a mere fifteen years. The Durant-Dort Carriage Company burgeoned from modest origins into a two-million-dollar enterprise, ultimately claiming the mantle of the largest vehicle manufacturer in the U.S. at its manufacturing hub in Flint, Michigan.

Witnessing the burgeoning popularity of horseless carriages, Durant was strategically positioned at the forefront of the nascent auto industry’s development. When James Whiting of Flint Wagon Works acquired Buick, he enlisted Durant’s business acumen. Under Durant’s astute leadership, Buick’s production outpaced both Ford and Cadillac combined within a span of just eight years.

The Rise of the GMC Powerhouse
Surprisingly, General Motors nearly absorbed Ford. Following the collapse of an attempted automobile merger involving multiple parties, Durant conceived a novel strategy: amalgamating Buick and Oldsmobile under a fresh banner named General Motors. Established on September 16th, 1908, GM swiftly gained traction, with Henry Ford himself entertaining the notion of selling the Ford company merely a year later. However, a stumbling block emerged in the form of a reticent bank committee, altering the course of automotive history. One can only speculate on the outcome had Ford indeed become a division of GMC.

Undeterred by this setback, Durant forged ahead with GM, diversifying investments into startups and small enterprises. In less than sixteen months, Durant amassed a portfolio of 22 companies under the GM umbrella, including noteworthy acquisitions like Oakland (later Pontiac) and McLaughlin (later GM Canada). These additions complemented existing brands such as Buick, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile within the General Motors portfolio.

Despite skepticism from banking circles regarding the longevity of personal automobiles, Durant remained steadfast in his vision for the industry. His foresight proved prescient, as evidenced by the eventual mass production and sale of 500,000 automobiles annually.

Later Endeavors
However, challenges loomed on the horizon with the waning popularity of larger vehicle models. Despite offering 21 distinct models, Durant faced stiff competition from Ford’s affordable Model T. Undeterred, Durant embarked on a creative partnership with Louis Chevrolet, leveraging the Buick brand to dominate America’s road races and revitalize its public image. This strategic maneuver, coupled with Durant’s resilience, enabled GM to rebound from financial adversity, expanding eightfold under his stewardship. Only the upheavals of World War I and the Great Depression could halt Durant’s momentum.

Despite the ebbs and flows of Durant’s tenure, General Motors achieved numerous milestones. From pioneering innovations like the electric starter during the era of hand-cranked carriages to groundbreaking advancements such as automatic transmission, catalytic converters, and airbags—first introduced in 1970 Cadillac, Buick, and Oldsmobile models—GM remained at the vanguard of automotive innovation.

Continuing its legacy of innovation, GM remains at the forefront of the automotive landscape, spearheading the Electric Vehicle market with groundbreaking offerings like the Chevrolet Volt, the first Extended Range Electric Vehicle. With a rich history of accomplishments, the future holds boundless possibilities for GMC and its brands, with the upcoming 2025 models poised to redefine the automotive industry once again.

Historic GMC Vehicle

We take it for granted today. GMC has become so synonymous with American automotive dominance that it’s easy to forget the manufacturer – like so many other twentieth century success stories – began as a modest dream. In this case, it was a dream shared by a pair of brothers, aiming to build the country’s most successful truck company from the ground up.

At Jennings Chevrolet Buick GMC, we have a deep admiration and respect for the historic building blocks that got us where we are now. Today, let’s take a deeper look at the early years of GMC.

The Formative Years: 1900 – 1912

Currently a division of General Motors, we’ve always associated GMC with the Detroit-based automotive manufacturing company. From 1911 – 1943 GMC was the General Motors Truck Company, before becoming the GMC Truck & Coach Division from 1943 – 1998. But when the company was established in 1900 by brothers Max and Morris Grabowsky, GMC stood for the “Grabowsky Motor Company.”

That original GMC name wouldn’t last long. In 1902, the Grabowsky brothers built the Rapid: the first commercial truck operated in Detroit. In conjunction, they renamed their company the “Rapid Motor Vehicle Company.” Though rudimentary in design, the Rapid still caught the attention of Durant-Dort Carriage Company owner William Durant, who had previously overseen the rise of Buick in an advisory role. Though the country didn’t realize it yet, Durant was building the architecture for what would become General Motors.

Durant purchased RMVC in 1909. Two years later, he also bought the Reliance Motor Car Company – another early commercial vehicle manufacturer. The two companies merged under Durant’s General Motors banner and changed their name to “General Motors Truck Company,” consolidating all GM truck production in Pontiac, Michigan and paving the way for the GMC we know today. By the time the GMC nameplate made its debut at the New York Auto Show in 1912, people were paying attention to the little truck company that could.

Pressing on Through Wartime: 1914 – 1945

GMC’s momentum continued rolling into 1916, when commercial truck driver William Warwick loaded his wife and daughter into their 1.5-ton GMC truck and transported a shipment of Carnation Evaporated Milk from New York to Seattle and back. In doing so, GMC became the first truck to cross the country in under 32 days

Unfortunately, World War I was well underway by then, and it had other plans for the young company. Like Buick, Ford, and most other American manufacturers, GMC began shifting its focus towards producing military vehicles. By 1918, nearly 90% of GMC truck production was dedicated to military vehicles. In all, GMC provided the U.S. Army with over 8,500 vehicles throughout World War I – mostly troop carriers, aviation support vehicles, and ambulances.

The decades between wars proved fruitful for the enterprising company. In 1923, GMC trucks were sent overseas to Japan to aid the recovery and reconstruction effort following the Great Kanto earthquake. In 1926, General Motors began expanding into other modes of transportation, acquiring bus and taxicab manufacturer Yellow Coach and beginning production on GMC buses. Yellow coach was renamed Yellow Truck & Coach Manufacturing Company, and all General Motors manufacturing operations were placed under YT&CMC. In 1943, after purchasing the remaining interest in YT&CMC, GM renamed the company GMC Truck and Coach Division – which it would continue to be known as throughout the greater part of the century, until it was officially shortened to GMC in 1998.

When the United States joined World War II, GMC once more turned their attention to military vehicles. In contrast to the 8,500 vehicles they supplied to U.S. Armed Forces 20 years earlier, GMC would produce over 600,000 trucks for the war effort throughout World War II. After the war, GMC simply continued their work on expanded truck design they had begun in the 1930’s, which resulted in the company’s earliest SUVs: the GMC Suburban and GMC Yukon.

Become Part of the GMC Legacy Today

There’s so much more to GMC’s rich story that we’ll dive into another day: the introduction of the Sierra and the shift from commercial to personal use trucks in the 1960’s, GM’s rounded line truck series of the 1970’s, the sales explosion of the 1980’s, the Acadia’s debut in 2007… the list goes on.

For now, you can become a part of GMC’s continued legacy when you stop in at Jennings Chevrolet Buick GMC, Chambersburg’s number one GMC dealership. From the 2024 GMC Terrain compact SUV to the spacious 2024 GMC Acadia, our inventory is loaded with modern, new and pre-owned GMC trucks and SUVs that pay homage to the company’s past – while paving the way towards its limitless future.

Chevy Blazer

The Chevy Blazer EV is back, and it’s learning that a lot can happen in three months. It’s already easy to forget just how much momentum the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV had amassed before a software-related stop-sale in January temporarily pumped the brakes on its hype train. Pre-orders were piling up for the much-anticipated electric SUV, and MotorTrend deemed it a cut above its closest competitors in the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y Long Range.

But now, the Chevy Blazer returns to seize its electric crown, as General Motors announced Friday it is resuming sales. Not only have the software issues that prompted the stoppage been addressed, but the Blazer EV returns with a handful of new software features. To cap it off, the MotorTrend SUV of the Year also sports a new, lower price to commemorate its return.

The 2024 Blazer EV, along with its full lineup of Chevy siblings, is waiting for you at Jennings Chambersburg. But first, let’s take a moment to remember why the Blazer EV was so anticipated in the first place.

Fire Sale

The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV replaces 2019’s revamped Blazer crossover (itself a revival of the boxy, off-road 1969 Blazer.) The newest Blazer certainly fits its moniker from an aesthetic standpoint, with fiery styling and the implied forward motion of its horizontal creases running down the profile. The EV is slightly shorter than the gas Blazer yet offers ample ground clearance.

The Blazer EV returns with four trims, with even more iterations expected to follow. The four current trims are the LT AWD, RS AWD, and RS RWD. As mentioned, each trim now boasts a lower price tag. The LT AWD now starts at $50,195 (down from its original price of $56,715). The RS AWD starts at $54,595 (down from $60,215) and the sporty RS RWD runs at $56,170 (originally $61,790). Lest you be alarmed, the price drop is in response not to the sales stoppage, but to comparable price slashes by its Ford, Nissan, and Tesla competitors.

What isn’t changing is the Blazer EV’s eye-opening efficiency numbers. Its real-world range has clocked in at 239 miles – 23 more than its acclaimed rival, the dual-motor Hyundai Ioniq 5. And with a max charge rate of 190 kW, the Blazer EV is a fast-charging phenom.

Software Upgrade Enabled

The Blazer EV’s advanced cabin was one of its immediate selling points, and it’s easy to remember why. The future is evident in every pixel of its massive 17.7-inch infotainment screen. An additional 11-inch digital display gauge rests beside it. Meanwhile, navigation, music, and other apps are all handled by the Google built-in system.

GM used the Blazer’s down time productively, implementing additional software features. New Blazer owners are now treated to customizable, multi-colored ambient lighting, as well as updated graphics with battery percentage display. GM assures that it has improved its quality testing and software processes to prevent software issues from hindering sales of the Blazer moving forward.

Blaze Your Own Path

It’s fitting that the Blazer EV’s return coincides with the start of baseball season. Back in January, the SUV seemed primed for a huge season, only to be sidelined throughout spring training. Thankfully, it’s back right in time for the opening day of spring, and all the family outings and getaways that come with it.

Make the switch to electric today when you inquire about the Blazer EV at Jennings Chambersburg, home for all things Chevy. We’re your trusted dealer for the latest electric vehicles, such as the Hummer EV. Visit Jennings today and help blaze a trail to a brighter, greener tomorrow.

Equinox

Chevrolet is preparing its newest Equinox, making it the latest Chevy to experience an overhaul within the past two years. In that period, every Chevy crossover and SUV – including the TraxTrailblazer, and Blazer – is either new or has received a redesign. With the 2025 Equinox, Chevy’s SUV vision fully comes to fruition.

The SUV market is currently the largest and most competitive automotive segment in the United States. To stand a chance, you need to stand apart – and the Equinox’s bold new exterior and thoroughly revamped cabin demands the attention of all eyeballs.

We should see the 2025 Equinox by year’s end here at Jennings Chambersburg. In the meantime, here’s what we can expect from the fourth generation, compact SUV.

A Rugged New Exterior…

Compare the 2025 Equinox with, say, the 2020 model, and its evolution over the past half-decade becomes apparent. What was once a rounder, more conventional SUV has been inspired by the sharp body lines of both the Chevy truck lineup and the 2024 Traverse. 2.3 inches wider than its 2024 counterpart, the compact Equinox has undergone muscular refinement – like an undersized professional athlete bulking up during the off-season.

The Equinox comes available in three distinct trims: LT, RS and ACTIV. Its bold new contours pair amicably with striking, all-LED light elements. The Equinox once again runs on a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower. It’s backed by a continuously variable transmission in front-wheel-drive configurations, or an eight-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel-drive.

…With a Tech-Heavy Interior

Like its refined SUV brethren, the new Equinox has been reimagined as a tech-first driving experience. Its new 11.3-inch, diagonal infotainment screen is more than 30% larger than the Equinox’s previous largest screen. Thanks to Google built-in, it’s also an interconnected hub, with quick and intuitive access to music, maps, media, and more.

Other cabin highlights include:

– Electronic Precision Shift
– Standard heated steering wheel & heated front seats
– Folding 60/40 split-bench second row seats
– Hidden rear cargo floor storage space
– Available wireless charging

Safety First

It wouldn’t be a 2025 Chevy if it wasn’t equipped with the latest in Chevy Safety Assist technology. This suite of features includes:

– Automatic Emergency Braking
– Forward Collision Alert
– Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking
– Following Distance Indicator
– Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
– IntelliBeam

That’s in addition to now-standard safety features such as Rear Vision Camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Alert, Emergency Braking, and more.

Chevy (Equi)nox It Out of the Park

The actual equinox – which signals the start of spring – takes place on March 19 this year. We won’t see the arrival of the new Chevy Equinox by then, but perhaps by the time the autumnal equinox rolls around on September 22. And while the 2025 model is surely set to be Chevy’s definitive version of the Equinox, that doesn’t mean the 2024 version is a slouch.

You can find that and much more here at Jennings Chambersburg, including the redesigned 2024 Trax. If you’re looking to go in a different direction in 2024, perhaps this is the year you go electric with the Chevy Bolt EV? Your options await you, and you’ll find them at the number one Chevy dealership in Chambersburg.

Happy people at a car dealership
Car Sales, Car Repair and Gym concept in Istanbul – 2015

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and you’re quickly running out of hours to find the perfect gift for that special someone. Sure, you could always serenade them with flowers (dead in a week) and chocolates (gone in less that time) for the umpteenth year in a row. But if your sweetheart is a car fanatic, this could be your chance to make like a racing enthusiast and go the extra mile.

Compliments of Jennings Chambersburg, here are six Valentine’s Day gift ideas for the auto enthusiast near and dear to your heart.

A Day at the Track

If your gearhead is an avid fan of NASCAR or Formula One, chances are they’ve fantasized about hitting pedal to metal in their favorite race car or luxury vehicle. Fortunately, there are spots throughout the country to test drive exotic cars at high speeds firsthand. By making the three hour trip to Pittsburgh, you can check out the Steel City’s Xtreme Xperience race track. Slide behind the wheel of a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, or another incredible vehicle as you navigate around a 1.6-mile course. Prices for the experience start at $249.

While you’re at it, consider throwing in a new pair of leather racing gloves. If your significant other is going to spend the day cruising around at breakneck speeds, they should at least look the part.

A Full Detailing

What better way to express your own devotion than by showering your partner’s car with love? The only thing that beats finding a brand-new car in the driveway on Valentine’s morning is finding your trusted, reliable car looking like brand new. Detailing a vehicle can be as thorough a process as you want it to be; treat the exterior to a waxing, polishing, or repainting, while shampooing and lathering the interior. Detailing will do much more than save a trip to the car wash – it will resuscitate that new car smell.

An Automotive Getaway

Go big this year by planning a trip to one of the auto world’s premier attractions. Book a flight to Los Angeles and visit the Peterson Automotive Museum, featuring one of the largest car collections in the world. Get lost in a world of gears and glamor when you check out iconic movie cars at Universal Studios. Or perhaps you’d prefer to vacation north in Detroit – the birthplace of the modern vehicle – and its nearby Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn. Better yet, make a road trip of it; cruising the open road in your Chevy Trax with your significant other by your side may wind up being the greatest gift of all.

Lego Car Sets

Whether you’re seven or 70, it’s hard to go wrong with Legos. When you don’t have the money to gift your partner their dream car (and who does?), the miniature version can be just as thoughtful. It helps that Lego sets are now available in virtually every configuration you can imagine. Ferrari, Corvette, even James Bond’s Aston Martin… you and your partner can spend the rest of the winter assembling them together. With prices ranging from $20 to north of $500, Legos are agreeable with most every budget.

Amazon Echo Auto

If your beau is still driving an earlier car model, bring them to speed on modern driving amenities with the affordable Echo Auto. Simply connect through your phone’s Alexa app and enjoy a modern, hands-free driving experience. Listen to your favorite music or podcasts, call and message using voice commands, and more – all through the magic of this inconspicuous smart speaker.

Driving Sunglasses

Let’s face it – you’re (hopefully) going to be driving around central Pennsylvania with your partner for the foreseeable future. The least you can do is make sure they don’t embarrass you. Keep your motorist muse looking sharp with a pair of aviator sunglasses. Check out this pair from Cyxus, which mixes UV protection with a classic style.

It’s All in the Game of Love

Make this Valentine’s Day one they’ll never forget when you pay a visit to Jennings Chevrolet Buick GMC. If a new or pre-owned vehicle is in your short-term plans, this could be the perfect time to spring the ultimate surprise on your special someone. From the 2024 Buick Encore GX to the off-road dynamo that is the GMC Terrain, the grandest romantic gestures can be found right here at Jennings Chambersburg.

It’s the start of a new year, which incidentally means your car is officially one model year older – and needier. Still, by remaining vigilant for any potential warning signs, you can stay one step ahead of costly repairs this year. Plus, learning to spot these red flags early can significantly extend the lifespan of your vehicle.

One thing you’ll need to determine in 2024 is if you’ll need new brakes. Courtesy of Jennings Chambersburg, here are five early signals that your brakes might be calling for your help. (Hint: it sounds a lot like screeching.)

High-Pitched Screeching

Often, you’ll hear brake problems before you see or feel them. This is usually due to a high-pitched screeching sound that emits from your brake pads when they start to wear thin. However, it’s important to note that the screeching isn’t directly caused by worn-out brakes. Car manufacturers deliberately include a small metal piece in the brake pads to serve as an indicator, signaling the need for replacement.

If the squealing noises persist even after installing new brake pads, the next step is to inspect your rotors. It’s possible that they may have become glazed, which happens when the metal heats up and burns as a result of excessive braking. Take a look at your rotors for any blue marks or a dark ring, as either of these signs could indicate that it’s time to replace them.

If you start hearing a loud, metallic grinding sound instead of the screeching noise, it’s a sign that your brake pads are completely worn out and need to be replaced as soon as possible. Immediately take your car in for service, as leaving your car in this position could potentially pose safety risks.

The Eye Test

Sometimes it’s best not to overanalyze things. If you notice any visible issues with your brake pads, chances are there’s an actual issue with your brake pads. The brake pads can be found between the wheel spokes, pressed against the rotors. Take their measurements, and if they’re thinner than a quarter of an inch, it might be a good idea to schedule your service appointment with us at Community Chevy.

Performance Anomalies

When your brakes stop responding as quickly as they should, it may be a sign of a leak in your braking system. If your brakes are sending out vibrations (the kind that causes your steering wheel to shake, not the Beach Boys kind), either the brake pads or rotors need replacing.

Your brakes regularly send signals like these to alert you about their condition. The better you become at understanding your vehicle, the easier it becomes to evaluate abnormal performance, determine the reasons behind it, and address it swiftly.

Extreme Sensitivity

You might start your Buick Enclave today only to find your brakes unusually sensitive, jerking you to a halt at the slightest tap of the brake pad. This could be the result of the rotors wearing down unevenly or the brake fluid needing a replacement.

On the other hand, it becomes problematic when your brakes lack sensitivity and require excessive pressure to engage. This might indicate low brake fluid, worn-out brake pads, or even suggest an issue with your car’s hydraulic system.

Puddle of Doom

The worst sight on a beautiful, sunny day is a pool forming beneath your parked vehicle. Unless it’s leftover water from an unexpected overnight shower, chances are it’s your car’s brake fluid leaking out. You should be able to distinguish between regular motor oil and brake fluid, as the latter is visibly thinner.

Give Me a Brake

Life is full of starts and stops… but you should still have some autonomy over when they occur. Don’t compromise your safety or the health of your vehicle with faulty brake pads or rotors. Visit us at Jennings Chevrolet Buick GMC today, where we never put the brakes on a good deal. With our robust inventory of new and pre-owned vehicles, you’re sure to find the car, truck, or SUV that pulls out all the stops.

Chevy Corvette

Longtime Corvette owners probably think one of two things when they see the above headline: “way to state the obvious,” or “that’s an understatement.” But although Corvette aficionados have been aware of the car’s dependability for decades, we now have fresh polling data to support the stellar reputation of America’s supercar.

Consumer Reports surveyed its members about their car purchases in 2023, focusing on one key question: if you had to do it over again, would you buy or lease the same model? A plethora of luxury and high-performance vehicles jostled for positioning in the upper tier, but it was the Corvette that emerged as the clear, consensus choice for the top spot.

(I Can Get) Satisfaction

An overwhelming 93 percent of Corvette owners said they would definitely buy the car again, the highest mark in the Consumer Reports poll. For context, 88 percent of Rivian R1T owners said they would definitely buy it again – and Rivian’s electric pickup finished with the second-highest satisfaction score. A comparatively low 81 percent said they would re-purchase the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which was still good enough to slot in the list’s tenth spot. The entire Consumer Reports list was as follows:

1. Chevrolet Corvette (93% satisfaction score)
2. Rivian R1T (88%)
3. Mazda MX-5 Miata (88%)
4. Lexus NX Hybrid (87%)
5. BMW X5 (85%)
6.Rivian R1S (84%)
7. Ford Maverick Hybrid (83%)
8. Kia Telluride (82%)
9. Honda Pilot (82%)
10. Hyundai Ioniq 6 (81%)

Unlocking a New Gear

The Corvette’s continued popularity should come as no surprise. Last month, it was named to Car and Driver’s 10Best list for the 25th time (the second-most appearances ever, trailing only the Honda Accord). Yet even as the Corvette has become synonymous with consistency, it’s done anything but rest on its laurels.

With the 2025 Corvette, Chevy will enter the sixth model year of the eight-generation Corvette (or Corvette C8). The 2024 base-level Stingray was the most powerful production model yet. Thanks to its LT2 V8 engine, which focuses its power on the rear wheels, it was able to blast a quarter mile in just 11.2 seconds. The Stingray also boasts 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, and its 0-to-60-time clocks in at 2.9 seconds.

Apple Carplay
Drive using smartphone. Automotive technology concept. Infotainment, navigation communication device

When GM announced earlier in 2023 that it was phasing out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with its latest EVs, it was met with some confusion; why would GM go out of their way to dissolve popular features, and disrupt the level of phone-to-car interconnectivity that auto brands have been progressing towards?

Now the company has spoken out in further detail about their decision, and it comes down to one factor: safety. And as we know, when it comes to your safety, General Motors leaves nothing to chance. Below, Jennings Chambersburg examines the reasons behind GM’s decision and the alternative that awaits the Chevy Blazer and other EVs.

CarPlay and Auto: A Brief History

Apple CarPlay is now almost a full decade old, having debuted in March of 2014. Its goal was to enable a car’s head unit or infotainment system to function as a display and controller for an iPhones’ iOS. Suddenly, a driver’s music, navigation systems, calls and messages could be fully accessed without taking your eyes off the road.

A year later, Android Auto launched in March 2015. Like its Apple counterpart, it sought to mirror phone features through vehicles’ head units and infotainment screens. Although Google initially prevented Android Auto from accessing third party mapping apps – only allowing its own apps such as Google Maps and Waze – it relaxed these measures in 2020.

Put Down Your Phones!

Seeing as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have more or less become standards, why would GM abandon them now – especially when the vast of Americans use Apple and Samsung phones? Those two brands currently account for 83% of the total smartphone market share.

According to GM, the primary motivating factor is safety. Tim Babbitt, GM’s head of product for infotainment, cited driver distraction caused by cell phone usage. Babbitt insists that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both suffer from stability issues, prompting drivers to take their eyes off the road and pick up their phones again when system connections are slow or unresponsive. With built-in systems, Babbitt argues, drivers will encounter fewer connectivity issues and therefore be less likely to pick up their phones.

But the decision also takes into account more than safety concerns. With company-made software, GM sees the opportunity to collect and monetize more driver data, deliver a more comprehensive user experience, and even warm up the EV battery before driving – all of which Apple and Samsung lack the full ability to do.

So… What’s Next?

It should be said that GM’s decision is not without precedent, especially amongst their EV competitors. Both Tesla and Rivian opt for their own system in place of CarPlay or Auto, and both have been successful.

GM hopes to follow this model with their “Ultifi” infotainment software, which features a suite of Google apps such as Google Assistant and Maps, as well as popular music apps like Spotify. In particular, Google Assistant has the potential to deliver a voice-controlled navigation assistant that is tied to every feature of your built-in system – including systems CarPlay and Android Auto wouldn’t have full access to, such as heating and cooling and battery monitoring.

The test subject of this entire operation is the Chevy Blazer EV, the flagship vehicle of both the new built-in system and Chevy’s electric fleet as a whole. The Blazer EV is currently experiencing a temporary software-related sales stoppage, but hopefully all will be resolved soon and the Blazer will go on to demonstrate the full capabilities of GM’s vision.

How Does That Sound?

It may take some time before we see if GM’s strategy pays off, but one thing is certain – the potential of a seamless, built-in system is boundless.
